Let's take a walk in the park with Yotsuba! [08 Jun 2004|03:56am]

Let's take a walk in the park with Yotsuba!

Title: Yotsubato! (Yotsuba and!)

Story and Art: Azuma Kiyohiko (Azumanga Daioh)

Volumes reviewed: Book 1 and 2

Genre: Comedy / Slice of Life

Story: Little Yotsuba and her father move into a new town. They meet new friends in their neighbors and the Adventures of Yotsuba begin..

Art: Azuma sensei's art is incredible. He is a master which you can see quite clearly in his works. His ability to express feelings or tell a story in comic so few panels is pure genius. His character's facial expressions are also priceless.

Characters: Great! All the characters are great!! Especially Yotsuba of course!! She's OWESOME!!! Reading about Yotsuba on her adventures always make me Laugh and smile even on a sad day! ^0^

Review: Being a HUGE fan of Azumanga and recently acquiring the Yotsuba figure in the recent issue of Dengeki Daioh. I feel a bit ashamed it took me this long to pick up the tankouban volumes of Yotsubato! I've even been pestered by many friends to read it. I've read Yotsuba's first appearance in "Try! Try !Try!" a couple yrs back. So I was already a fan of Yotsuba ^-^ The first 2 volumes were at the Kinokuniya booth at PMX so I made it a point to pick them up. Well, since I have quite a bit of reading time available this week, I finally pulled them out and read them. Man! This comic is awesome!!! I feel REALLY BAD it took me this long now that I read it!!! This is a really great title and Azuma sensei is a Genius!!! Yotsuba herself and her "weirdness" really puts a good feeling in me and her adventures always make me want to laugh and smile a lot. The other characters are very funny as well and are all likeable. I especially like Asagi, She's awesome. Similiar to Azumanga, the characters personalities are very well developed. Each are unique and have something about them that sticks out and makes them recognizable but at the same time each are very well balanced. Over the top but Down to earth at the same time ^-^ There is also of course Azuma sensei's Genius chemistry between the characters!! The interaction between all of them is executed flawlessly.

One thing all you Azumanga fans will notice right away is the fact that Yotsubato! is told in a standard comic format and not the 4 panel strip format that Azumanga had. It's all good tho. Yotsubato! still Awesome ^0^

There is not enough nice things I can say about this manga. As I said before the only thing that makes me sad is the fact it took me this long to get around to reading it. I Highly Reccomend it to anyone. If you are a fan of Azumanga, even better. Like Azumanga, Yotsubato is a very 'feel good' story. There is no angst and no heavy drama here. But dont let that make you believe there is no substance here, there is definetly a Message to Yotsuba's adventures ^-^ I think Azuma sensei really wanted to show the curiosity and wonder that only a Child can have in Yotsuba. I think All of us with the Heart of a Child should entrust to Yotsuba our Pioneer spirit to explore the unforseeable future!! ^0^ @!

Highly Recoomended to all! Unfortunately I'm not sure if anyone has done any scanlations online. Here are the ISBN of the first 2 volumes for those who are interested-

よつばと! Yotsubato! vol.1 ISBN : 4-8402-2466-8
600yen Media Works publication

よつばと! Yotsubato! vol.2 ISBN : 4-8402-2674-1

A Chambara Tale set in the Edo era Told with Style [22 May 2004|04:42am]

A Chambara Tale set in the Edo era Told with Style..

Title: Samurai Champloo

Directed by: Watanabe Shinichiro (Cowboy Bebop, Wolf's Rain, Macross Plus)

Episode(s) reviewed: Ep 1

Genre: Older audience stuff. Not really Shonen or Shojo. Tho I will say the themes will definetly appeal more to a male audience but not Limited. The Ladies will find stuff to like here too. More like one of those Sunrise TV series, Or more appropriate look at the director -_^

Story: From Ep1 There hasn't been a real establishment of a Plot yet but it has given us a few hints. I wont spoil them but SC is basically the story of 3 People. A Loudmouthed Badass- Mugen, Quiet Badass Rounin- Jin and Fuu a girl who has no Family. These 3 characters by some thread of fate meet up under "troublesome" circumstances and the story begins..

Music: Not bad overall. I'm not sure what's up with all the J-Rap Openings this season. I guess they want the shows to sound hip?

Characters: So far. I love all 3 of them. They have great interaction. I'm definetly looking forward to how they will develop!

Art: Captures the style and mood of the series very well. I Like it!

Review: This has been a title I've been looking forward for awhile. Ever since the official Website first opened up, I've been anticipating it. Well now it's finally here and I'm Happy to say it was worth the wait. The characters are Great and the story has a Lot of potential. All 3 of the main characters are very likeable. One thing to note is the fact that The Screenplay is VERY VERY Good!!!! (I really like it anyway) And the Fight scenes are Very Nice. Watanabe is trying a Lot of new Techniques I have never seen him use before in this way. Many of the Directing techniques used in this episode I've never seen used in Anime before, Needless to Say it was Very well executed and I have no Complaints. I am Very Looking forward to what other techniques will be used with Later eps.

One thing this series definetly has is Style. You can see that right when you first see the OP. The 2 male protagonists of the series Mugen and Jin are the prime example of Cool Badasses. They are men who live by their own principles and ideas and will not betray what they believe in. They are Like the heroes in the old Daei Chambara films right down to fighting the Evil Magistrates. One of them, Mugen is the Fiery one and the Other, Jin is the cool one. As for the Female Lead, Fuu is your typical Brave Heroine. She's brash and resourceful but has a certain cuteness and likeable aspect to her that all good Heroines should have. I'm really Looking forward to the Adventures these 3 characters will have. After the first episode From the looks of it, It's possible the premise has some similarity to Mugen no Jyunin from what I can tell But we'll just have to wait and see as the story unfolds.

Anyway' Overall I really enjoyed the first Episode and highly reccomend to anyone who Likes Chambara films, Samurai Anime, Watanabe Shinichiro works, stylish anime, etc. It's a bit bloody (for those who have a weak stomach) but nothing extreme. Very Light. Well? Go Download it now!! -_^

Death Note - Manga Series, chapters 1-14 [13 May 2004|03:39pm]

[ mood | amused ]

It's only just begun, but it's already developed into an interesting story -

Title: Death Note
Written by Ooba Tsugumi
Illustrated by Obata Takeshi (also artist of Hikaru no Go)
Chapters: 1-14 (22 chapters released in Shounen Jump in Japan)

Summary: Shinigami are ugly creatures who merely have to write your name and the circumstances of your death in a little black book, called a 'Death Note', to kill you. But one shinigami is tired of this endless existance. He leaves his notebook on the ground in a school yard to see what will happen, and it is picked up by ace student Yagami Raito. What does he do with it?

Why, he uses it, of course!

Raito determines himself dispenser of justice and begins to murder hundreds of criminals across the world, earning himself the name 'Kira', the katakana that approximates 'Killer'. But such acts, 'righteous' though they may be, cannot go unpunished by the world. Police across the world begin to investigate Kira, headed by the mysterious young man known only as 'L' - and he is the one boy who could possibly match the genius of Raito.

It's the match of two geniuses! Will 'Kira' escape, or will 'L' catch him? We have yet to see.

Art: It's a very realistic style and very consistent. If you've seen Hikago's art and liked it, you'll like this art. The characters are very expressive with their faces especially - Raito has this look that is just horrendously spooky, and wait until you see L's face - he's tired around his eyes in a way that says a lot for the sort of life he leads. His mannerisms suggest reclusiveness as well, and this is all just expressed by the art. And the shinigami? Appropriately disgusting. XD

Storyline: This story is a dark, twisted one, so beware if you're not up for a psychological twist. You view most of the series from the eyes of the pathological sociopath Raito, which leads you to root for him even though you know that what he's doing is wrong. However, it's also an extremely intriguing path. Raito is a genius. So is L. And as they play cat and mouse, one finds himself wondering who exactly is chasing whom.

In some ways it seems as if the story is destined to wrap up too quickly - L seems to be rapidly closing in on 'Kira', and 'Kira' is feeling the heat already in chapter 13. Additionally, it seems at first as if there will not be enough action, since all Raito must do is write down names in a book to kill them. But the writer does an excellent job of keeping one intrigued with the investigating team, and the ways Raito kills people.

It seems as if more twists are waiting for us in the shadows, however, as the Shinigami that gave Raito the book holds yet more secrets for us. And one cannot help but wonder how this will all end ... because it cannot end well.

Overall: I think this series has great potential, and I look forward to more chapters. <3 Will justice prevail? and if so, whose justice?

I highly recommend this series.
I rate the story PG-13/R for psychological themes.

In case you all didn't already know. The information posted before is ture. Funimation has licensed Hagaren (FMA) And made the announcement that Will also air the 51 episodes in OCT 2004 on Cartoon Netowrk (Details as to times and such are unknown as of the moment). DVD release is slated for Jan 2005. Just to confirm this, I called a friend who is attending E3. He called me back today and confirmed this information. So it is true. Hagaren is now licensed. I'm not sure how this will affect the Fansubs, but as long as I can dld the raw off my regular JP BT site, I'll be happy.

Full Metall Alchemist Liscensed.

1. It started with rumors and an article saying that it was announced at one of the pre-conferences for E3(big gaming convention) that Funi licensed FMA and that it would air in October.
2. Animesuki marked FMA as 'licensed'.
3. Anbu say they'll give up FMA if it's true, and remove all their torrents.
4. Sonchou say they will keep going anyway.
5. Anbu then say it *isn't* official. Their channel title says 'We haven't dropped FMA yet'.
6. Nobody knows what is going on exactly. Fangirls panic through all this stuff.

We'll give full update once we figure out ourselves it really is liscenced or not.

PS - ae86kai needs to go to work and look at Japanese websites XDD

Respects have to be paid when they are due [06 May 2004|06:22pm]

[ mood | touched ]

This is old news by now and I'm ashamed that it's taken me this long to post it. This doesn't really have anything to do with anime reviews or current BT stuff but I feel it must be mentioned.

As many of you might know, Legendary Mangaka Yokoyama Mitsuteru one of the Most Influential and Talented men the Manga industry has ever known. Creator of Legendary Classic works such as Tetsujin 28, Giant Robo and Babel II passed away a little less than a month ago in a hospital in Tokyo on Thursday April 15, 2004. He was hopitalized for injuries suffered during a smoking related fire in his home in Tokyo. He was 69 yr old.

I just wanted to take this moment to pay respects to Yokoyama sensei and thank him for all he's Given us. In his Long Career Yokoyama sensei has done over 200 manga works. Many of them classics today. To name a few, Tetsujin 28 (Gigantor), Giant Robo, Otenba Tenshi, Babel II, and Magical Witch Sally. And who can not forget his classic adaptations of the Classic Chinese stories Suikoden and Romance of the Three Kingdoms which lasted 60 volumes and considered his Life achievement. Even if you haven't read his works, it's still a very sad moment to see the passing of one who has made inspired so many ppl in his time and given us such great works. I had only wished his death was a more peaceful one. But One can not forget that this man Truly Lived and he has accomplished many goals and inspired many of the Mangaka today who have gone off and made their own "Classics" And we should be happy for that, This Man Lived a GREAT Life!!! ^-^

Thank you for all the inspiration and Memories you have given us over the years Yokoyama sensei. Surely you will be Missed and you will Live on in our Hearts Forever.

And thank you for giving us Ginrei -_^

Message from Ae86kai-
Yokoyama sensei! I hope you read this up there but this Drink I hold in my hand, *Raises glass* I drink it to you!! ^0^

GINREI!!!!!!!!!! *drunk*

Initial D 4th Stage Review [27 Apr 2004|06:29am]

[ mood | hopeful ]

Sorry for the delay, Been Busy -_^

Now it's Here!

Title: Initial D 4th Stage Project D

Episodes Reviewed: 1-2

Genre: Shonen

Story: Taking place shortly after Initial D 3rd stage. Takumi now Joins the Takahashi Brothers to form the Elite 'Project D' Racing team. Going all over Japan to set course records everywhere they go.

Characters: Great Characters!

Art: some ppl dont like the art but I have no Prob with it and I think it's Awesome.

Music: One of the things ppl Love about Initial D is the Incredible Soundtrack,. 4th stage is no Exception!

Review: If you are an Initial D fan, then there is not much for me to say. ^-^ This series is one of my favorites. Not just because I love Street Racing but also Because it depicts everyday Life in a very realistic way. The characters are very real and indentifiable and have a lot of great development throughout the series. Stages 1-3 were incredible. Although there were many changes from the Manga, a Lot of improvements were made to certain scenes vs the Manga which made the scene come off much more Powerful than it did in the Manga. The anime falters in one thing tho. And that is the fact that it cuts some stuff from the Manga. If you've read Initial D Manga and watched the Anime, then you know exactly what I'm talking about. And Yes, I know Cuts from Manga to Anime and Anime filler material is nothing new. In the situation of Initial D 4th stage I will address one important matter of why I bring this issue up to you and how it applies to this review...

They cut Out the battle between Keisuke and Atsuo!!!!!!! >.<

How can they do that!!!!!??? I know it was a very starightforward race but still!!!!! It was Awesome!!!! WHY!!??

The race starts and then the screen freezes and then it cuts to the next scene WHICH IS THE FOLLOWING MORNING AFTER THE RACE!!!! >:0 WHY!!??!!??

I noticed right in the beginning when I watched Ep1 that there were diff from the Manga which of course is something I expected. Considering how 3rd Stage's ending was almost completely diff than what happened in the Manga (Which I thought the Anime actually improved on)

Needless to say I was very angry. The race was fairly straightforward,Yes BUT the fact is they should have kept it in. I think they really did a blow to Keisuke by cutting it out!!! >:0

As you can all tell from reading this I was very sad and angered to see it taken out, I was so in denial when I first saw it that I was actually waiting for one of the characters to go into Flashback mode to recall what happened, hoping the Director was trying to go with some Artistic recap and show us the Uphill Battle...

But it didn't happen :(

Anyways' Aside from the omission of the battle between the FD3S and R34 -.- and a couple of other things.

The first 2 eps were pretty good. However, I think the Condensing at times was a bit too apparent for my tastes. They really condensed the development of Tohru in these 2 eps. I remember in the Manga I felt a lot more for his character, Probably because he had more panel time and devlopment. I hope that the Toudou Juku arc is better done than this one. We still have 12 more eps to go. I wonder what they'll cover up to. One of the interesting things is that in the OP we are treated to a scene with Bunta Driving his Impreza WRX Sti. I can tell you that is quite a ways story wise. If they really get that far, I wonder if they will either rearrange arcs like they did with Impact Blue and Ryosuke arcs in the 1st Stage or Really Condense stuff so that it goes that far -.- (Let's hope that it's NOT the condensing) So I am very curious as to how they will pull that one off. I wonder if we'll get to see Kyoko in 4th stage... Hmm..

I'd say we are off to a decent start. I am still mad about the omission of the battle but I will get over it. I understand there are only 14 eps but still, I'm the Mads!!!

I'm really hoping the Todou arc will be done with more detail and they will not cut out anymore battles. Of course I am also very curious how much 4th stage will cover. I'm hoping it will cover a decent amount but at the same time not make things feel condensed. Hopefully I'm not asking too much. As a HUGE Fan, I dont think I am.

Well I guess we can keep rewatching these 2 eps until the next 2. Man, 2 months between blocks is a long wait...

Very Long indeed -.-

Gundam Seed Season 2 will be aired in Japan, Sept 2004. It will take the time spot of Inu Yasha because it's one of the Prime Time zone. Most people think that this doesn't mean Inu Yasha will end, they think Inu Yasha will probably move to a different time slot. We can always hope ^^

Aishiteruze Baby [21 Apr 2004|07:55pm]

[ mood | crazy ]

more new anime updates for you guys to download!

Title: Aishiteruze Baby. (I love ya, baby)
Episodes: 1-2
Genre: Shoujo.
Plot: Yuzuyu's mom leaves her. Her cousin, a high school boy Kippei's family takes her in. But no one wants to deal with her. So it's up to Kippei to take her to kindergarden, bring her back, make her lunch, and tuck her in to bed!! I do'nt know why i love it, i just LOVE it. It was boring until the last 10 minutes won me over, when Kippei came late to pick her up. And she thought that her mother left her because she didn't like her onigiri. Dang! Talk about child psychology!!! T.T
Characters: Yuzuyu is SOOO ADORABLE. ADORABLE I say! The main guy, Kippei, he's a horrible playboy. As in... the creator didn't develop him well enough as a playboy. I understand he is, but he sure needs more development. But as a cute older brother! AWSOME! Can't wait to see more of yuzuyu with him ^^
Art: 3/10 Horrible.... MOST HORRIBLE animation of the year! I'd rather give it 0, except the manga art was decent. So much slow motions and freeze scenes, talk about totally underpaid budget.
Music: 2/10 HORRIBLE..... They didn't have money for good music I think... the one scene where the family is talking about what to do with Yuzuyu... that music doesn't match... it was sooo bad...
Seiyuu: 2/10 REALLY bad. I think I can do a better acting job then any of them. HOWEVER, if i'm correct, the little 5 year old girl Yuzuyu is actually done by an 9 year old actor. One of the youngest seiyuu!! IF that rumor is true, dang she does a REALLY good job voice acting. Other then that, everyone... sucks.
Op/Ed: 1/10 One of the most boring op/ed ever...
Overall/Recommendation: 9/10 Even with the HORRIBLE animation job, this is worth getting for the story and the characters. Better if you guys can find the scanlations online and read it.
